Ella is a Ph.D. candidate at the City University of New York and New York Botanical Garden Plant Sciences program under the mentorship of Dr. Ina Vandebroek and Dr. Edward Kennelly. About Ella
Ella Vardeman is a Ph.D. candidate at the City University of New York and New York Botanical Garden Plant Sciences program under the mentorship of Dr. Ina Vandebroek and Dr. Edward Kennelly. Her research focuses on the ethnopharmacology of plants used by Haitian immigrants in New York City for women’s health. Ella currently serves as the student representative of the Society for Economic Botany and is a recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award through the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements and National Center of Complementary and Integrative Health. In 2020, she received the Garden Club of America Anne S. Chatham Fellowship for Medicinal Plant Research.
Ella received her undergraduate degree in Plant Biology with a minor in Anthropology from the University of Georgia, where she completed independent research projects under Dr. Wendy Zomlefer (Plant Biology) and Dr. Julie Velasquez Runk (Anthropology). Through a summer internship at Emory University, she also worked under the supervision of Dr. Cassandra Quave.
