What is the Spirit Lecture and Award?
Here is a description from the NIEHS website:
The Spirit Lecture and Award, inaugurated by the NIEHS Diversity Council in 2002, recognizes outstanding women in science who have achieved balance in their lives. Successfully navigating today’s workplace involves balancing responsibilities for families, jobs, and the multiple roles in which they participate. In addition, these women mentor and provide outreach to the wider community, all of which compete for their time and talents. In recognition of Women’s History Month, the selected honoree is invited to share her experiences with the NIEHS community at an annual talk and award ceremony. The NIEHS Spirit Lecture became a part of the Diversity Speaker Series in 2018.
The Takeaway
I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected for the Spirit Lecture and Award this year. As a wife, mother, and disabled person—I have faced a number of challenges in my journey to becoming a scientist. I’ve failed time and again, but I’ve succeeded too. Most importantly, I’ve learned A LOT along the way.
I hope that through this platform and opportunity, I can inspire others to leverage their creativity, their ambition, and their love for science to achieve great things in service of humanity.
I hope to see some of the Nature’s Pharmacy community today in person or online! Let me know what you think of the lecture.
Yours in health, Dr. Quave
