A problem I see with these studies is that they can’t be double blind. The difference in viscosity, taste, and smell between any vegetable oil and chlorhexidine would be obvious to investigator and subject.

This is a really good point, Tom! I agree - the texture and flavor would be hard to disguise in these studies. One plus in the model is that they base outcomes on bacterial counts and not self reported improvement.

I used to run clinical trials, including the Phase 3 trials for what became ALEVE, and I still like to pay attention to the details of trials. I am also a participant in a number of clinical studies of dementia and Parkinson’s. I more or less grew up in pharmacology departments at Hopkins and Rochester, where my Mother worked.
